From Proto-West Germanic *tah(h)rijan, derived from *tah(h)r (“a tear”) (Old English tēar). Cognate with Old High German *zaharen (Middle High German zecheren). See also Gothic 𐍄𐌰𐌲𐍂𐌾𐌰𐌽 (tagrjan, “to shed tears”).
