Inherited from Old Swedish thörskodder, thörskodher. Compound of torr (“dry”) + skodd (“shod”), attested since 1500 according to SO and 1529 according to SAOB.
Compare with Norwegian tørrskodd, Norwegian Nynorsk turrskodd, Danish tørskoet, and Icelandic þurrskór.
