Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *trewwō (“fidelity, pledge”), either via Gothic 𐍄𐍂𐌹𐌲𐌲𐍅𐌰 (triggwa), source of Spanish tregua, or via Frankish *treuwu, source of Old French trieve.
