turpmāks

From one of several dialectal variants of an original form turpāk (“further”), the comparative of turp (“to there, thither”): turpanāk, turpenāk, turpināk, reduced to turpnāk → standard turpmāk with assimilation of p-n to p-m. The adjective form was later created by analogy.[1]

   turpmākā attīstība, darbība ― future, coming development, activity

   viņš atrada ceļa biedri turpmākai dzīvei ― he found travel companions for (his) further, future life (= for the rest, the next part of his life)

   Andrejs likās nedzirdējis Līvijas turpmākos vārdus ― Andrejs seemed not to have heard Līvija's following, next words
