From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wētras, *wētrā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *větrъ (Old Church Slavonic вѣтръ (větrŭ, “wind”)), Lithuanian vėtra (“storm”), Latvian vētra (“storm”).
