From Arabic زَعْتَر‎ (zaʕtar), صَعْتَر‎ (ṣaʕtar, “wild thyme; condiment made from this herb”), probably from Classical Syriac ܨܬܪܐ‎ (ṣāṯrā), related to Hebrew צַתְרָה‎ (ṣátrā).
