The King is represented in New Zealand by the Governor-General of New Zealand, who holds the position of Commander-in-Chief of the New Zealand Defence Forces[2] they are authorised to raise and maintain the armed forces under the Defence Act 1990.

All members of the Defence forces take an oath of allegiance to the Head of the Defence Forces.[3]

While the King and the Governor-General have power to issue commands to the defence forces, they act on the advice of the New Zealand Government, which renders the main function of these roles to that of ceremonial duties.
