Etymology
From early modern German Eifer, from southern Middle High German *eifer (attested in eifrære, whence German Eiferer), probably from Old High German eivar (adjective), from Proto-Germanic *aibraz. When the word spread to other dialects the German -ei- was intepreted as an underlying Middle High German -ī-; compare the same in Dutch ijver.
