κιάλι

Greek

Etymology

Borrowed from Italian occhiali (eyeglasses), plural of occhiale; the apheresis perhaps resulting via crasis of article το (to) with an earlier Byzantine Greek ὀκκιάλιν (okkiálin); from occhio (eye) + -ale, from Vulgar Latin oclus from Latin oculus (eye) from Proto-Italic *okʷelos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (eye; to see); whence distantly cognate to Ancient Greek ὄψῐς (ópsis, sight) hence όψη (ópsi).
