- 1. From Ottoman Turkish قرنابیت (karnabit), قنبیط (kunnebit), from Arabic قَرْنَبِيط (qarnabīṭ), قُنَّبِيط (qunnabīṭ), itself from Ancient Greek κραμβίδιον (krambídion).[1] Doublet of καρναμπίτι (karnampíti).
- 2. From Medieval Byzantine Greek κουνουπίδιν (kounoupídin) (12th century)[2] Probably from a noun *κανωπίδιον (*kanōpídion), diminutive of Hellenistic κάνωπον (kánōpon, “a kind of short tree or bush”) of uncertain etymon.[3][4] (see city of Κάνωπος (Kánōpos)).
