According to Beekes, from the same Pre-Greek root of ψάω (psáō, to rub, wipe), ψωλός (psōlós, circumcized), ψώρα (psṓra, mange), ψωρός (psōrós, itchy, scabby), ψωχός (psōkhós, sandy) and ψώχω (psṓkhō, to rub small).
