Etymology
Named after the чӑваш, a Turkic tribe. The name could be from Proto-Turkic *yabaĺč (“quiet, peaceful, slow”) (compare modern Turkish yavaş), or related to Old Turkic 𐱃𐰉𐰍𐰲 (Tabγač), a Turkic name for a Xianbei clan in inner China, the Tuoba.[1]
