From Proto-Turkic *bat- (“to sink”)[1].

Cognate with Turkish batmak (“to sink, set”), Yakut батылын (batılın, “to sink”), Chuvash пут (put, “to sink, drown”).

батыу • (batïw) (intransitive)

  1. to sink, submerge
    Ағас һыуға батмай.
    Ağas hïwğa batmay.
    Wood does not sink in water.
  2. to drown
  3. get bogged down
  4. (of heavely bodies) to set, go below the horizon
    Synonym: байыу (bayïw) (the Sun)
