ботур

Bulgarian

Ботур на кълн аспержа

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *bъturь, *boturь (plant stem, sprout), an alternative form of *bъtyrь, *bъtarь whence dialectal Russian бата́рь (batárʹ, weed). Morphologically formed as боте́я (botéja, to grow, to flourish) (dialectal) + -ур (-ur). Further cognate with arch. Bulgarian бът (bǎt, specter, bat), бот (bot, wooden hammer), dialectal Russian боту́н (botún, altai onion).

For the semantic development, compare the akin Proto-Germanic *baumaz (shoot, sprout)English beam.
