Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *butьca, equivalent to буте́я (butéja, “to swell, to clumb”) (dialectal) +‎ -ца (-ca). Akin to Latin buttis (“cask”), butticula (“bottle”), whence Serbo-Croatian бу̏ћа (“bumpkin”), Slovene búča (“bumpkin”) and Bulgarian бу́тилка (bútilka, “bottle”).
