верига

Bulgarian

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *veriga. Possibly of Oghur origin, from Proto-Turkic *ȫrük (tangle, knit), reanalyzed to fit the Slavic morphology as if from въртя (vǎrtja, to revolve) + -ига (-iga). Dialectally, also attested as веруга (veruga) which is the expected development of *ȫrük > *wärug into Oghuric. If correct, then related to Turkish örgü (knit).
