верига
Bulgarian
Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *veriga. Possibly of Oghur origin, from Proto-Turkic *ȫrük (“tangle, knit”), reanalyzed to fit the Slavic morphology as if from въртя (vǎrtja, “to revolve”) + -ига (-iga). Dialectally, also attested as веруга (veruga) which is the expected development of *ȫrük > *wärug into Oghuric. If correct, then related to Turkish örgü (“knit”).
