Etymology
Inherited from Old Church Slavonic гѫба (gǫba),[1] from Proto-Slavic *gǫba. Cognate with Slovene goba, Slovak huba, Serbo-Croatian губа/guba, Russian гу́бка (gúbka). Non-Slavic cognates include Pashto غومبه (γumba, “swelling”). Compare Latin fungus, Ancient Greek σπόγγος (spóngos).
