From Proto-Slavic *žena + Proto-Slavic *-tva.
Akin to Czech ženitba, Bulgarian женитба (ženitba), Macedonian женидба (ženidba) Serbo-Croatian женидба, Kashubian Żenba, Slovak ženba. Probably connected with Sanskrit जनित्व (janitva).
