Borrowed from Classical Mongolian ᠢᠷᠪᠢᠰ (irbis), modern ирвэс (irves), from Proto-Mongolic *irbis, from Common Turkic *irbiš whence within the distribution of the animal Uzbek ilvirs, Uyghur يىلپىز (yilpiz), Kyrgyz илбирс (ilbirs), Kazakh ілбіс (ilbis).
