Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥ke/o, *morko, *merk (“decay”), see also Latin marcēre (“to wither, droop”), North Frisian marig (“tallow”), Lithuanian mer̃kti (“to soak”). Hungarian méreg might also come from here.
