Etymology
слепо́й (slepój, “blind”) + -ень (-enʹ), referring to the fact that some horsefly species appear to go blind while in the process of sucking blood and can be easily removed. Compare to Ukrainian сліпи́й о́від (slipýj óvid), German Blindbremse.
