From *tegiš "due, payable; appropriate", verb stem *tegiš- "to exchange goods", from Proto-Turkic *dẹg- (“touch”).
Immediately cognate with Bashkir тейеш (teyeš, “must”), Tatar тиеш (tiyeş, “must”), Kyrgyz тийиш (tiyiş, “must”), Uyghur تېگىش (tëgish, “must”).
