ҡайғы

Bashkir

Etymology

From *qadğu "sorrow, grief; concern".

Immediately cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (qadğu); Old Turkic [script needed] (qaðğu); Old Uyghur [script needed] (qajğu, sorrow, grief); Kazakh қайғы (qayğı), Kyrgyz кайгы (kaygı); Uzbek qaygʻu, Uyghur قايغۇ (qayghu, sorrow, grief), Turkish kaygı (worry, concern, anxiety), etc.

No consensus exists on further etymology. Possibly related to Proto-Turkic *kaj- (turn; pay attention), as attested in Middle Turkic qaj- "~to pay attention; be compassionate", Yakut хайыс- (xayıs-, to turn), Khakas хайарға (xayarğa, to pay attention), Turkish kayırmak (to protect, favor).
