Etymology
An Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hnbsʾn' /hambasān/, “opponent; opposition”), [Book Pahlavi needed] (hnbsʾnynytn' /hanbasānēnīdan/, “to accuse, to charge with”). Remodelled from *ամբասան (*ambasan), under the influence of դատաստան (datastan) or Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hambastan /hmbstn'/, “to form, compose; bind together, intertwine, encircle”).
The short form ամբաստ (ambast) attested only once as ամբաստ լինել (ambast linel, “to accuse”) is an artificial formation, with no etymological value.
