ամբաստան

Old Armenian

Alternative forms

  • ամբաստ (ambast)

Etymology

An Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hnbsʾn' /hambasān/, opponent; opposition), [Book Pahlavi needed] (hnbsʾnynytn' /hanbasānēnīdan/, to accuse, to charge with). Remodelled from *ամբասան (*ambasan), under the influence of դատաստան (datastan) or Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hambastan /hmbstn'/, to form, compose; bind together, intertwine, encircle).

The short form ամբաստ (ambast) attested only once as ամբաստ լինել (ambast linel, to accuse) is an artificial formation, with no etymological value.
