Etymology

Perhaps an Iranian borrowing with a basic meaning “a cart with covered interior”, composed of Iranian *andar- (interior) and *var- (to cover); both constituents are found in անդրավարտիք (andravartikʿ). Alternatively, the first part *անդր (*andr) could have meant “cart, wagon”, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ndʰ-ur- (road) with Old Norse ǫndurr (snow-shoe) and Sanskrit अध्वन् (ádhvan, road) as cognates; the second part could then indeed be from Iranian *var- (to cover) or *var- (to lead), whence վարեմ (varem), or a contamination of both.

Ałayan connects with անուր (anur, ring), but this is considered implausible by Martirosyan.
