Etymology 1

PIE word
*wáy

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *wĺ̥kʷos (wolf)[1][2], but there are great phonetic problems.

However others prefer derivation from Proto-Indo-European *waylos (howler, wolf), which replaced the usual Proto-Indo-European *wĺ̥kʷos (wolf) due to taboo.[3]
