ելակ

Alternative forms

Etymology

Borrowed from a Kipchak language: compare Bashkir еләк (yeläk).

First found in Stefanus Roszka's dictionary, quoting two works known only to him, therefore probably written in the Aṙtial (Transylvania) dialect milieu which was spoken by the Armenians in Romania, Hungary and Poland, some of whom immigrated from Crimea. Also found in the Nor Nakhichevan dialect, whose speakers likewise emigrated from Crimea. This geographical context explains the borrowing from Kipchak.

Copied from Roszka's dictionary into standard dictionaries and from there accepted as the standard designation of strawberry in the literary language.
