Uncertain. Ačaṙyan considers a Semitic borrowing, comparing Arabic ظَلِيم‎ (ẓalīm, “male ostrich”), plural ظِلْمَان‎ (ẓilmān). This is however a transparent Arabic-only formation, the first consonant of which corresponds to ṣ /sˤ/ in Akkadian and Northwest Semitic, ṭ /tˤ/ in Aramaic.

In the dialects recorded only as Kharberd չայլամ (čʿaylam, “a kind of bird”) and Sivas ջՙայլամ (ǰʿaylam, “used for comparing to something very tall”), e.g. ջՙայլամի պէս բան մՙէ (ǰʿaylami pēs ban mʿē, “it is a ǰʿaylam-like thing”).
