Inherited from Proto-Turkic *āla (variegated); cognate with Azerbaijani ala, Bashkir ала (ala), Chuvash ула (ula), Kazakh ала (ala), Kyrgyz ала (ala), Turkmen āla, Uyghur ئالا (ala), Uzbek ola and Yakut ала (ala).
