Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ang- (curve, bend). Cognate with Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾkʾyšʾk /ākēšāk/, hook, pulling instrument), Sanskrit अङ्कुश (aṅkuśa, hook).
