Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wlg /warg/, “leaf”) (whence Early New Persian بلگ (balg)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *warkás ~ *walkás. Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬐𐬀 (varəka), Sanskrit वल्क (valka, “bark of a tree”).
