Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bek (firm, solid), whence also Ottoman Turkish پك (pek). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (bekle-, to protect, keep an eye on), which preserved the original meaning. See also the second and third usages, in which the original meaning is also preserved.
