Metathesis from Middle Persian [script needed] (wygrʼd /wiγrād/), from Proto-Indo-Iranian, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ger- (“to be awake, to awaken”). Cognate with Sanskrit जागर्ति (jāgarti).
