  1. (archaic) to hurt by introducing a sharp point, to sting
    • 11th Century CE, Fakhruddin As'ad Gurgani, Vis and Rāmin
      گهی از بهر او خوابش رمیده / گهی خارش به دست اندر خلیده
      gahi az bahr-e 'u xâbaš ramide / gahi xâraš be dast andar xalide
      Sometimes his (the gardener's) sleep has been disturbed because of it (the rose), / sometimes its thorn has cut his hand.
