Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tīrek (prop, support) and thus related to دیره‌مك (diremek, to support); cognate with Azerbaijani dirək, Bashkir терәк (teräk), Chuvash чарак (čarak), Kazakh тірек (tırek), Tatar терәк (teräk), Turkmen dīrek, Uyghur تىرەك (tirek) and Uzbek tirak.
