Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *sakal (beard); cognate with Azerbaijani saqqal, Kyrgyz сакал (sakal), Tuvan сал (sal) and Chuvash сухал (suh̬al).

صقال (sakal)

  1. beard, facial hair on the chin, cheeks, jaw and neck
    Synonym: ریش (riş)
  2. whisker, that part of the beard which grows upon the sides of the face
  3. (nautical) dolphin striker under the end of a ship's bowsprit
