Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الْغَرْب‎ (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally “Tripoli of the West”), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الشَّام‎ (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally “Tripoli of Syria”) (whence Ottoman Turkish طرابلس شام‎ (tarâbülüs-i şâm)).
