Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الْغَرْب (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally Tripoli of the West), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally Tripoli of Syria) (whence Ottoman Turkish طرابلس شام (tarâbülüs-i şâm)).
