From the root ع ص ب (ʕ-ṣ-b). Relative adjective (nisba) composed of عَصَب (ʕaṣab, nerve) + ـِيّ (-iyy) and in the later sense from tribal bonds and connections; compare عَصَبِيَّة (ʕaṣabiyya).
