Ultimately from Ancient Greek φάλαγξ (phálanx) likely through Aramaic, also with the loaned sense of a “flat-surface, panel, plank, or a wooden surface”; compare Aramaic פּלגּה (plaggā, drum) and see Ancient Greek φῠλᾰκή (phulakḗ, a form of detention, stockade for punishment).
