From Middle Persian [script needed] (nmwtn' /nimūdan/, to show, guide). Said to be derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₁én (in, down) + *meh₁- (to measure). Compare Avestan 𐬥𐬌𐬨𐬀 (nima, measure down, show). Also related to آزمودن (âzmudan, to test, experience), and پیمودن (paymudan, to measure, to walk).
