From Middle Persian [script needed] (pshw' /passox/), [script needed] (pʾshw' /pāsox/), 𐫛𐫘𐫇𐫟 (pswx /passox/), from Proto-Iranian *paticahwaH, derived from Proto-Iranian *cánhati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱens-. Cognate to Sanskrit शंसति (śaṃsati), Latin cēnseō.
