Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁂𑀇 (caṭṭei, to devour with relish, eat noisily, onomatopoeia). Compare Gujarati ચાટવું (cāṭvũ), Marathi चाटणे (ċāṭṇe), Bengali চাটা (caṭa).
