Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (kʾlpwt' /kālbod/, body, shape, form), from Ancient Greek καλοπόδιον (kalopódion, shoemaker’s last). Akin to Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫐𐫀𐫓𐫁𐫏𐫅 (kʾlbyd /kālbid/) and Old Armenian կաղապար (kałapar), գաղափար (gałapʿar), Iranian loanwords. Doublet of قالب (qâleb), the same Greek word via Arabic.
