From گلاب (gulab "rosewater") + ـی (-ī suffix forming nouns or adjectives) literally "rosewatery" or "rosewater-like". The word and suffix are derived from Classical Persian, the term itself is specifically of Indo-Persianate tradition, with the rest of Persianate world using صورتى (surati "pink") an Arabic borrowing.
