Learned borrowing from Aramaic אֲשּׁוּרָיָא (ăšūrāyā). By surface analysis, ܐܵܫܘܿܪ (āšor, “Assyria; Ashur”) + -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending). Doublet of ܣܘܼܪܵܝܵܐ (surāyā) and ܐܵܬ݂ܘܿܪܵܝܵܐ (āṯorāyā).
