ܝܘܚ

Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

Etymology

Likely from a variant form of the verb ܗܵܘܹܐ (hāwē, to be), forming unattested *ܝܲܗܘܲܚ (*yahwaḥ) or a corruption of ܗܵܘܲܚ (hāwaḥ), both having elements of the root ܗ-ܘ-ܐ (h-w-ā) and ܐܲܚܢܲܢ (aḥnan, us).

Pronunciation

  • (standard) IPA(key): [ʔiːwax.]
  • (Nineveh Plains)
    (Tesqopa) IPA(key): [ʔiːwux.]
  • (Sanandaj) IPA(key): [ʔiːwux.]

Verb

ܝܼܘܲܚ (īwaḥ)

  1. first-person plural present indicative of ܗܵܘܹܐ (hāwē): We are
    ܐܲܚܢܲܢ ܢܵܨܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ ܝܘܲܚ، ܐܲܚܢܲܢ ܐܵܫܘܿܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ ܝܘܲܚ
aḥnan nāṣrāyē ìwaḥ, aḥnan āšorāyē ìwaḥ
We are Nazarenes, we are Assyrians.

Usage notes

  • The ܚܒ݂ܵܨܵܐ (ḥḇāṣā) under the ܝܘܿܕ (yod) usually drops if a vowel sound precedes, with or without ܐ, and the ܝܘܿܕ (yod) coalesces. Therefore written ܝܘܲܚ (ìwaḥ)
