From Proto-Semitic *ʿ-r-p (cloud) + a suffixed -l. Compare Hebrew עֲרָפֶל (ʿărāp̄el) and Ugaritic 𐎓𐎗𐎔𐎚 (ʿrpt /ʿurpatu/).
