Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀓 (aṃka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit अङ्क (aṅká, “hook”)[1], from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hankás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hánkas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ónkos, from *h₂enk- (“curve, bend”). Doublet of अंक (aṅka). Cognate with Gujarati આંકડો (ā̃kaḍo), Hindi आँकड़ा (ā̃kṛā).
