Etymology
Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (kakkaḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa, “crab”) (see there and Hindi केकड़ा (kekṛā) for more). Cognate with Hindustani کیکڑَا / केकड़ा (kekṛā), Punjabi ਕੇਕੜਾ (kekṛā) / کیکڑا (kekṛā), Bengali কাঁকড়া (kãkoṛa), Assamese কাঙ্কড়া (kaṅkora), Sinhalese කකුළුවා (kakuḷuwā).
