Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀟𑁆𑀟 (gaḍḍa), 𑀕𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀻 (gaḍḍī), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀸𑀟𑁆𑀟- (*gāḍḍa-); ultimately from Sanskrit गन्त्री (gantrī), the feminine variant of गन्तृ (gantṛ), a compound of गम् (gam, "to go, move") + -तृ (-tṛ).
